The importance of IP related to GPS has been growing steadily starting around the year 2000. It has become especially significant in recent years given the explosive growth of the smartphone and handheld device markets. Various companies in this technology space have pursued different strategies to build their IP portfolios associated with this technology in order to protect their marketshare and product lines. The objective of this report is to study the Intellectual Property (IP) landscape related to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and understand the strategies pursued by the key players in building their portfolios addressing this technology.
